1896-O
.
PCGS graded MS-63
. Frosty white. Scarce
date. The 1896-O is one of the most intractable Morgan
Dollars to find with any degree of eye appeal, luster, and
original surfaces. Collectors will search an eternity to locate
a suitable one. Most of the remaining coins from the 4.9
million mintage (many were likely melted in 1918) show
signs of circulation signs, and Mint State examples tend to
be covered with heavy abrasions, the luster “lackluster,”
and the coins poorly struck. This piece has rich, coruscating
mint frostiness with very few abrasions present. The strik-
ing is, as expected, somewhat shallow in the center of each
side, this accounting for the MS63 grade designation, but
all in all it is three steps better than most other Mint State
examples being offered currently. (

1896-O
.
PCGS graded MS-63
. Frosty and toned on both
sides. To the inexperienced eye, the 1896-O Morgan Dollar
would come across as a common, everyday O-Mint date in
this long-produced and widely collected series. The New
Orleans Mint struck just shy of 5 million dollars this year.
Characteristic of the decade excepting only the 1898-O and
1899-O, the striking quality is, to put it charitably, well
below average compared to, say, the 1880s decade O-mint
dates. Since many coins made their way into circulation,
this date is obtainable in worn condition. Even low grade
Uncirculated examples can be purchased for a modest sum.
In grades above the average BU level, on the other hand,
the '96-O is one of the condition rarities in this series. This
desirable example is a choice lustrous one with natural
patina acquired over many year, with some of the luster still
bright and hard-working as it glow beneath. Some weak-
ness of strike is seen at the above the ear and at the
eagle’s breast feathers. All other areas indicate the proper
sharpness from metal flowing deep into the die recesses.
