. What
was the reason for striking so many Silver Dollars from 1878 to
1904? United States silver mine owners saw multiple threats,
domestic and foreign during the early 1870s. Domestic indus-
tries needed little silver compared to the already large require-
ment for coinage. The German Empire under the “Iron
Chancellor” Bismarck adopted a gold standard, and threw over
8,000 tons of silver on the market; then came enormous discov-
eries of silver in Nevada (the Comstock Lode being only the
most famous of these). This meant that the market price of sil-
ver (reckoned in gold dollars) fell, and the Mint Bureau could
buy foreign silver more cheaply. The lobby's chief legislative
friends began submitting bills which would, when enacted, force
the Treasury to buy enormous amounts of new domestic (not
foreign, and not recycled) silver, at artificially high prices, for
coinage only into silver dollars. Lot of 3 coins. (
