1880-S
.
PCGS graded MS-68
. Back in the 1970s and early
1980s, this would have been called a
Wonder Coin
when viewed
at a coin show. Now, it seems like the sometimes overused
words, Superb Gem really don't quite describe the true beauty
of this example. The obverse is reflective with a deeply frosted
portrait indicating it was struck with a freshly prepared die. The
reverse, on the other hand, was struck with a more used die
leaving it with a satiny field and barely frosted device. Both
sides exhibit a scant amount of reddish-golden peripheral ton-
ing. An absolutely remarkable specimen destined for the finest
collection.
Pop 192; 13 finer, 8 in 68+, 5 in 69.

.
NGC graded MS-63 Star
. Richly toned over the
reverse as if this one was an "end coin" in a paper roll. Multicol-
ored iridescence includes hues of turquoise, blue, green. violet,
crimson, gold, and others. A real treat for the toning enthusiast.

PCGS graded MS-67
. Both sides of this Superb
Gem display tremendous eye appeal. The glowing silver-
white surfaces on this marvelous coin are virtually devoid of
color, save for the slightest amount of reddish-golden color
at selected rim areas on each side. Radiant cartwheel luster
proceeds from softly frosted, satiny surfaces. As expected
of the grade, there are no singularly mentionable marks or
spots. Neither NGC nor PCGS has assigned a higher
numeric grade, and this example is tied for the finest
graded at both services.
Pop 4; none finer at PCGS.

PCGS graded Proof 62
. A nicely reflective, non-con-
trasting example that features a bit of peripheral toning on each
side. Some hairlines and minor marks limit the grade. Only 984
proofs were minted. (
