NGC graded Proof 65
. A colorfully toned Gem
with mottled sky-blue and gold iridescence equally distrib-
uted over each side. The strike is sharp for a Type 2 silver
three cent piece, though some lightness is noted at a few
reverse stars. Still, this is indicative of multiple blows of the
dies, just some uneven striking pressure. As a whole, this
series is poorly struck regardless of date or strike format.
From an unlisted, but no doubt small proof mintage for the
date, perhaps on the order of several dozen pieces. The
PCGS website suggests just 60 or so are known in all
grades. A highly important offering in this sale.

. Satin mint luster filters
through the attractive patina on this Gem example. Shades
of dappled cobalt-blue and peach-rose dominate the sur-
faces with additional mauve and tan, colors. Well struck on
most of the obverse stars with no individually mentionable
distractions. This is a blend of qualities that will entice any
specialist in this series to desire this offering. A delightful
condition rarity that is sure to please.

PCGS graded Proof 67+ Cameo PQ.
CAC
APPROVED.
Not only is the 1865 the first proof in the
three cent nickel series, but it is also the rarest. Given the
fact that numismatists frequently prefer first-year coins
when assembling type sets, one can easily understand the
elusiveness of survivors in today's market. It is generally
recognized that about 500+ proofs were struck this premier
year of issue, and the 1865 is a key date for the series as a
proof. This is a mostly brilliant Cameo Gem featuring bright
surfaces that are lightly toned at the peripheries. A boldly
contrasted appearance shows between mirror-finish fields
and frosted devices. A single tiny spot is mentioned on Lib-
erty's cheek for future identification purposes. Fully struck
and free from contact marks, this impressive Gem would
make a beautiful addition to any collection.
Pop 1; the fin-
est example graded by both services.
