1890's, 9¢ encased postage, the "Feuchtwanger" type.
HB-UNL, EP-95a
. Not exactly an encased postage stamps,
since it was not manufactured by Scovill under Gault's patent.
Also, even called the "Feuchtwanger" type, there's no direct
connection between this piece and Dr. Feuchtwanger. The name
simply comes from the design on the reverse depicting an eagle
and a snake vignette on the reverse that looks like the 1837
hard time tokens. These issues are believed to be produced
around the early 1890's for the collector market.
The stamps
are in VF conditions, while the case is in beautiful EF
with old time reddish-violet toning.
Estimated Value ................................................... $450 - 500

As long as we can remember, proof 1857 and
1858 Flying Eagle cents have been overshadowed by the
popularity of the well known 1856, but years of certification
has clarified the true rarity -- particularly in Gem Proof -- of
these popular coins. This remarkable Gem example exhibits
razor-sharp striking definition and lovely multicolored iri-
descence, along with clean, virtually flawless surfaces. Vari-
ous hues of mint-green, sunset-red, old-gold, and others
combine to decorate the nicely reflective underlying fields.
Close examine with a loupe reveals mint-made diagonal file
marks beneath the first 8 and 5 in the date, and faint dou-
bling on UNI. These are consistent with the diagnostics for
a proof example of this date and type. Snow characterizes
this variety as "very rare", estimating that perhaps 100
pieces were originally produced, for approximately 80
minor proof sets and 20 pattern sets. A seldom offered
issue and a true opportunity for the small cent specialist.

nuance of pale champagne and brown toning on both sides.

sionally rounded texture.
