Lot 191

1798 S-185 R2 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU55.

Frosty tan and light steel brown with darker steel

brown toning on the highpoints. There is a puff of dark steel toning in the field over the bust, another left of

the L in LIBERTY, and a third along the dentil tips at D-ST. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected

areas on both sides. The notable marks are a horizontal pin scratch in the field off the bottom edge of the chin

and a small planchet void (as struck) within the dark puff left of the L. MDS, Breen state V, with fine cracks

in the field before the portrait plus a radial crack through the Y into the forehead. Graded EF45 net VF35 and

tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #27634. Bland says EF45 net VF35 as well but tied for CC#5 in

his census.

RARE LATE STATE S-185

Lot 192

1798 S-185 R2 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded XF45+.

Choice glossy medium chocolate brown.

Smooth and very attractive, nearly flawless with just light wear on the devices. The only notable marks are a

trail of tiny ticks below the F in OF. Rare terminal die state (TDS), Breen state VIII, with a clearly defined rim

cud break at IC in AMERICA. All the die cracks and clashmarks described by Breen are clear and the reverse

is rotated 20 degrees CCW. A very nice cent that comes with a very nice provenance. Graded VF30 by Del

Bland Noyes says VF25 net VF20 and tied for CC#17 overall but CC#2 of the terminal die state.
