Lot 196

1800 S-209 R3 PCGS Genuine, AU Details, Cleaning.

Frosty medium chocolate brown and steel with

lighter brown toning in protected areas. Reddish steel brown toning shows in some of the protected areas

on the upper half of the reverse and there is a puff of darker olive brown toning under ST in STATES. The

only notable defects are a small patch of microscopic pitting over the top of the A in STATES and a dusting

of very fine carbon left of the O in OF. This cent offers excellent eye appeal and we can find no evidence

of “cleaning.” LDS, Breen state VII, with a narrow rim break in the dentils just right of the denominator in

addition to strong die clashmarks on the obverse and swelling at TY in LIBERTY. Graded VF35 and tied for

CC#10 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#11, his photo #35058.

Our grade

SEMI-UNIQUE TERMINAL 1800 NC-4 RARITY

Lot 197

1800 NC-4 R7- PCGS G4.

Glossy medium chocolate brown and steel blending to darker olive brown and steel

in protected areas. Looks smooth to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals very fine roughness in the fields and

protected areas while the devices are smooth. No marks or verdigris. The date is easily readable although the

bottom is starting to fade into the rim, and most of the legends are clear. Terminal die state, Breen state III,

with a huge cud break covering much of the field behind the portrait. This is the largest cud break in the entire

series of early large cents. The only other example known in the terminal state was also part of the Reynolds

collection (see our auction 1/31/2016, lot 235, a PCGS graded G6). Graded AG3 and tied for CC#3 overall in

the Bland census. Noyes says AG3 and tied for CC#5, his photo #26627.

Our grade is AG3+

. An extremely

important cent for the collector of great die states. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the

PCGS Secure label.
