WELL-PEDIGREED S-221
Lot 198
1801 S-221 R2 Corrected Denominator 100/000 PCGS graded AU55.
Glossy olive brown and steel with
frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas, particularly on the reverse. Smooth and sharp with only
trivial marks. A small planchet chip in the field over the hair ribbon and a half dozen microscopic pinpricks
under the L in LIBERTY are good identifying marks for this cent. E-MDS, Breen state II, showing fine die
clashmarks on both sides but no crumbling in the dentils at F-A on the reverse. The Corrected Fraction feature
is strong. A very nice example of this popular “Redbook” variety, and it comes with a great provenance. Noyes
graded AU50 net EF40 and tied for CC#5, his photo #27661. Bland says AU50 and CC#4.
Our grade is
EF45
. The attribution, 100/000 feature, and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label.
