Lot 186
1798 S-180 R5+ Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded F15.
Mostly glossy dark chocolate brown and olive
with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are decent and appear perfectly smooth to
the unaided eye, but a glass reveals extremely fine roughness in the fields and protected areas on both sides.
The notable marks are a tiny pinprick under the left edge of the B in LIBERTY, a thin diagonal nick near the
hair left of the eyebrow, and a tiny speck of reddish verdigris on the left foot of the I in AMERICA. None
of these defects is visible without the aid of a good glass and the eye appeal is nice. LDS, Breen state V, with
strong rim cud breaks at UN and TATE. Graded VG10 net G6 and tied for CC#19 in the Noyes census, his
photo #27732.
Our grade is F15 sharpness net VG10
. The attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted
on the PCGS Secure label.

Lot 187
1798 S-181 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8 PCGS graded AU50+,
CAC Approved
.
Variety with a Large Fraction
(with Large 0’s over Small 0’s in the denominator). Choice medium chocolate brown and steel with frosty
lighter steel brown toning in protected areas and darker steel brown on the highpoints. A smooth, very
attractive cent. Lightly worn on the highpoints with only trivial contact marks. A thin diagonal nick on the
curl before the ear lobe and a dull nick down the right side of the E in LIBERTY can help identify this cent.
MDS, Breen state II. There are a few die cracks on the obverse including a rather strong horizontal one under
the hair ribbon and a lighter one from the rim through the bust and truncation into the field left of the lower
curls. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CCW, which is not unusual for this variety. The Large 0’s over Small
0’s in the denominator are sharp. In addition, the bottom of a stray 8 shows in the drapery over the right
side of the normal 8 in the date, an interesting feature not mentioned in the Breen reference. Graded EF40
Choice and CC#6 in the Noyes census, his photo #27730.
Our grade is VF35+, very close to EF40
. The
attribution and Reynolds provenance are noted on the PCGS Secure label.
Pop 1; 3 finer at PCGS for the
variety, 1 in 55, 1 in 62, 1 in 64+
