1843-O. Small date, crosslet 4
.
NGC graded AU-55
.
Mostly untoned and rather well struck for the commonly seen
weak issue. The obverse and reverse show scattered handling
marks from circulation, but none are too deep. The mintmark is
much larger on 1843-O quarter eagles than seen on the 1840-O
or 1842-O coins, and this larger mintmark style continues in use
after this year. The 1843-O is the most plentiful issue of the
1840s and these can be obtained in grades above the Choice
Mint State level. Despite what the mintage implies, there are
still likely fewer than 1,000 of these around today, a small sum
when compared with many issues of the 19th Century. (

1846-O
.
NGC graded AU-50.
CAC APPROVED
. Mostly
untoned with satiny golden hues throughout. The surfaces are
pleasing, as there are minimal handling marks from brief circu-
lation. Rather sharp for this notoriously weak issue, as all of Lib-
erty' s curls are full, and only the left leg of the eagle shows
minor softness along with his claw below. A tough coin in all
grades, with perhaps 175 known today, few seen finer than a
low end Mint State grade. Highly collectible and elusive when
found this nice. Only 62,000 struck. (

1852-O
.
NGC graded AU-55
. Untoned with bright reflective
surfaces. Desipite its high mintage--relative to other 1852
branch mint coins, the 1852-O is quite a tough date to find in
grades approaching mint state. This attractive AU-55 example
should please most date and mint specialists. (
