1840-O

.

NGC graded AU-55

. Nice even gold toning on both

sides with slightly deeper gold hues on the uppermost devices.

Only 33,580 struck and from that meager beginning a scant 125

or so are known today. The strike is decent, although the left

thigh of the eagle shows moderate striking softness, common to

this issue. This is one of the finer examples technically, as most

fall into the XF-40 to AU-55 range. Finer pieces quickly become

prohibitive for most collectors to pursue, especially in any Mint

State grade.

1842-O

.

NGC graded AU-50

. Light even toning on both

sides. The 1842-O is one of the tougher New Orleans issues to

find at all, especially so in high grade. Furthermore, these usu-

ally come poorly stuck up, not so here, as Liberty has most of

her hair definition and the eagle' s thigh is sharper than most

seen. Surface quality is attractive with minor scattered nicks

from circulation. Only 19,800 struck, and today there are just

over 100 known.

Pop 12; 71 finer at NGC.
