BRITAN NIA. Date 1771 in exergue. Mint state and extremely

scarce in top grades.

* Peck notes that that the 1771 Proof farthings are similar to

the current farthings of 1771 except that the border teeth are

thicker and the rims are usually faulty. This specimen does not

disappoint on the second count and a large piece of raised

excess metal is evident on the reverse rim alongside the NNIA

in BRITANNIA. A slightly less raised piece of excess metal runs

along the top of the reverse rim for much of the left side of the

coin, and below the obverse portrait there is a raised piece of

metal. In fact a quick glance at plate 15 of Peck' s book shows

that his own specimen had similar die idiosyncracies!

shields with crowns in angles. Upright die axis. Mint state with a

light golden green and blue toning, this coin has a catalogue

value of around $700 in XF. No higher grades priced.

Obverse dwarf standing: JEFFERY DUNSTAN MAYOR OF GAR-

RAT. Reverse, text on 3 lines in centre and round periphery:

NEAR FINSBURY SQUARE LONDON 1795, and TO BE HAD AT

THE CURIOSITY HOUSE CITY ROAD. Edge plain. 32mm diame-

ter.

Jeffrey Dunstan, a travelling dealer in old wigs was elected

Mayor of Garrat, a small village

In Surrey. He was superseded by a muffin seller ' Sir' George

Cook, and died from alcoholism in 1797. A rare token in this

condition. Mint state with original color.
