Great Britain. Halfpenny, 1717
. S.3659. First ' dump' issue.
Obverse, draped laureate bust of king right by Croker, GEOR-
GIVS. REX. Reverse, Britannia seated left, date in exergue. This
is normally a poorly made coin, but the detail (especially on the
King' s portrait) is exceptionally sharp, and resembles that of a
proof. Superb surfaces on this early striking, and one of the best
struck currency copper pieces of the era. Superior to the Basil
Nicholson specimen (lot 169). Lustrous mint state.
