PCGS graded MS-65
. Both sides display a mixture of
teal and mauve toning, the obverse is quite even while the
reverse is somewhat mottled in texture. This low-mintage issue
(only 12,000 pieces were struck for circulation) is especially
scarce at the Gem grade level. An especially attractive piece
from the famous Eliasberg Collection.

A relatively small mintage of 792 proof Bar-
ber half dollars was completed in 1893, the second year of
the design. Walter Breen,
Encyclopedia of U.S. Proof Coin-
age
, opines that this date is somewhat scarcer than the
1892, but less popular with collectors because of the first-
year-of-issue effect. Examples in Proof 68 condition are vir-
tually unknown, and this specimen is the single finest certi-
fied in the Cameo designation by PCGS.
The present coin is a stunning Cameo example, with spec-
tacular blue-green, gold, deep red, and violet patina over
both sides that deepens toward the border areas. The pris-
tine surfaces are brightly reflective under the toning, and
the field-device contrast is profound, especially as the coin
turns under a light. The strike is razor-sharp in most areas,
but typical softness appears at the juncture of the shield
and eagle's wing. An important opportunity for the Barber
half dollar specialist.
Pop 1; none finer at PCGS.

Lovely turquoise-blue, sky-blue, crimson, and golden toning
is mixed with other colors of the rainbow. This is a stunning
Proof striking, and it is a coin that has been preserved in
essentially "as struck" condition since the year it was pur-
chased from the Mint. There are no hairlines on either side
and the fields are deep and unfathomably mirrored with
pleasing mint frost over the devices, which yields a partial
cameo contrast. An important and visually magnificent
coin. Only 880 proofs were issued in 1895.
