1835. Overton-103, Rarity 2
.
PCGS graded MS-65
.
This attractive specimen exhibits pronounced golden-russet
and crimson toning at the peripheries on each side. The
strike is sharp throughout on this satiny Gem, and blem-
ishes of any sort are not worthy of singular mention. A later
issue Capped Bust half dollar that should enjoy serious bid-
ding competition.
Pop 5; 2 finer, 1 in 65+, 1 in 67+.
(
PCGS # 6168
)
Estimated Value .................................... $12,000 - 14,000

1836. Lettered Edge. O-109 Rarity 4.
.
PCGS graded MS-
64
. A sharp spike is seen on the outer point of star 7 and the
olive stem is entirely over the top of C. A scarcer die pairing
with sharp definition throughout, not always the case on these
coins. Nice light toning is seen on both sides, and just a couple
of tiny abrasions are reported at the center of the obverse,
these possibly limiting the grade.
Pop 57; 23 finer
. (
PCGS #

Estimated Value ..............................................$2,800 - 3,000

1838. Reeded Edge
.
PCGS graded AU-55.
CAC
APPROVED.
Gold Sticker.
A textbook example of this issue
with regards to surface condition, color and strike. The finely
granular surfaces have abundant, radial luster and are nicely
toned overall. The stars are well struck for the most part while
some of the milling is weak on the reverse. (
PCGS # 6177
)
Estimated Value ................................................... $500 - 550

1839-O
.
PCGS graded Fine-15
. The New Orleans Mint
began operations in 1838. The half dollars struck there in 1838
and 1839 prominently display the "O" mintmark on the obverse
above the date in the exergue. Beginning in 1840 on half dol-
lars, the mintmark would be switched to the reverse under the
eagle. Well, but evenly worn with some deep peripheral toning
on each side. One diagonal mark is mentioned on Liberty's
cheek. (
