1828. Square Base 2, Small 8's, Large Letters. Over-
ton-118, Rarity 3
.
PCGS graded MS-65
. Lovely shades
of mauve-gray and lilac toning are displayed on each side in
an even fashion. A more than moderately fresh and lively
Gem with strong luster underpinning the attractive surface
color. Furthermore, it possesses a sharp strike with full def-
inition on the motto above the eagle. Everything a collector
would want from the grade, and probably then some. 1828
was a year in transition at the Mint. Several different date
punches were used.
The Guide Book of United States Coins
lists five major varieties.

1830. Small 0. Overton 102, Rarity 3.
.
PCGS graded AU-
55
. Distinguishable by a small tine (spike) that protrudes into
the field from the feather just below the juncture of the right
wing with the body. The surfaces, which have a light amount of
wear on the devices, are luminous beneath golden-russet and
sea-green toning that deepens at the rims. Nicely struck and
appealing. (

1831. Overton-103, Rarity 1
.
PCGS graded MS-66
. A
faint die crack below the date and a recut upright on the 5
in the denomination confirms this common Overton die
pairing. Modest honey-gold and pale blue colors grace this
highly lustrous and well struck Gem. The reverse is virtually
pristine, and the obverse is carefully preserved.

1831 O-111 Rarity 1
.
NGC graded MS-64
. A curving die
crack connects the bases of the digits of the date. The stars and
some of the lettering on the scroll on the reverse are not fully
defined, as is normally seen on this variety. Both sides present a
fresh, untoned appearance, and there are distracting abrasions.
A Choice quality type coin.
