SILVER PENNY (852-858 AD)

Aethelwulf, King of Wessex, 839-858 AD

Canterbury mint. Bare-headed, draped portrait facing right, of “neat style”; reverse, large voided &

inscribed cross, MONETA and moneyer’s name Daegberht inscribed on and between the limbs of the

cross. Rare. Sharply struck except for tiny portions, well centered on each side on a broad flan of good

metal having complete beaded rims, with brownish gray patina.

SILVER PENNY (858-862/4 AD)

Aethelberht, King of Wessex, 858-865/6 AD

Probably Canterbury Mint. Encircled portrait facing right, body and shoulders below circle; reverse,

inscribed beaded cross, moneyer’s name Cunefreth within horizontal cross-bar. Faintest wear, well de-

tailed with a crude portrait, on a broad flan of good metal with full beaded rims, choice surfaces, ancient

greenish gray patina.

Probably Canterbury Mint. Diademed portrait facing right within circle, body and shoulders below;

reverse, 3-line Lunette consisting of 2 lunettes, 3rd line between them expressing the moneyer’s name

Mann. Rare. Well struck on a broad flan with full beaded rims, faint crack through the king’s throat,

undisturbed greenish gray patina.
