SILVER PENNY (1024-1030 AD)

Cnut, King of all England, 1016-1035 AD

York mint, moneyer Ira. Pointed helmet portrait facing left, holding scepter; reverse, short cross voided,

limbs terminating at center in 2 circles, a large pellet in each angle, each enclosed by a broken annulet.

Exceptionally choice, well struck with every detail sharp, on a full broad flan of good metal, sheathed in

rich bluish purple gray patina.

Harold, King of all England, 1035-1040 AD

London mint, moneyer Eadwold. Diademed portrait facing left; reverse, “jewel cross”, a cross composed

of 4 ovals joined at the base by 2 circles enclosing a pellet. Rare. Minted Spring 1036 to 1038, when Har-

old was joint ruler with Harthacnut. Somewhat crudely engraved, on a full broad flan showing ancient

encrustation beneath silvery gray patina.

Harthacnut, King of all England, 1035-1042 AD

Bath mint, moneyer Waedell. Diademed portrait facing right; reverse, “jewel cross”, a cross composed of

4 ovals joined at the base by 2 circles enclosing a pellet. Very rare. Minted Spring to Autumn 1036, when

Harthacnut was joint ruler with his illegitimate half-brother Harold. A superb example of this briefly

coined type, with a crisp portrait and jeweled cross, clear and complete legends, on a broad full flan of

good metal showing complete beaded rims, and sheathed in ideal golden silvery gray patina.
