1922, $20 Gold Certificate. PCGS Superb Gem New

. This flawless Gold Certificate is

a rare exception to a rule: Fr. 1187s almost always come

with tight top and bottom margins, due to the position of

the engraved notes on the printing plates being very close

together. This piece has boardwalk margins all around, and

the colors are spectacular. The paper is bright and free of

any flaws, providing excellent contrast on both sides. The

originality is readily evident, with embossing visible from all

parts of the design and overprint. While a small handful of

Fr. 1187 mule variety notes have been graded a point

higher by PCGS, no Fr. 1187 non-mules have graded any

finer than this example. This one is as spectacular as any,

and any advanced collector would consider this a prize for

which it is worth stretching an extra bid or two.

1922, $50 Gold Certificate. PCGS Gem New 66PPQ

. This sale features several outstanding high grade Gold Certifi-

cates, with this the highlight of them all. The $50 denomination is much scarcer than $10s and $20s of the same series in all conditions, even

more so in the upper reaches of uncirculated grades.

This Gem is one of but four pieces graded 66PPQ by PCGS, with only one

example finer to date

. This note deserves every bit of the assigned grade, with bold, vivid colors, and exceptional originality. The centering

and margins are outstanding on both sides. High grade $50 Gold Certificates are seldom available on the market, which means that any col-

lector who wishes to obtain a true Gem can wait for quite some time between offerings. This example is as nice as any other that we' ve seen,

and likely cannot be topped in terms of sheer appeal.
