PCGS graded MS-65
. Sharply struck and highly
lustrous, this frosty-white example is sure to be of strong
interest to collectors of Seated Liberty coinage. The busi-
ness strike 1871 is a scarcer Motto issue with just 118,200
pieces produced. Mint State survivors are very scarce, and
true Gems are virtually non-existent. Many coins of this
issue are believed to have been melted to provide bullion
for the new weight Arrows coinage of 1873-1874 prior to
their release from the Mint.

PCGS graded Proof 67 Cameo
. A Superb Gem
Proof with magnificent originality. Both sides exhibit "tar-
get" toning with turquoise-blue, copper-rose, and pinkish-
silver iridescence that lightens at the central regions.
Watery fields and fully impressed details, the frosted-tex-
tured devices are fully visible at all angles of examination.
Our research indicates the proof Seated quarters from the
late 1860s and 1870s are seen much less frequently in
today's market than those that date from the 1880s and
early 1890s. Only 960 proofs were struck.
Pop 3; none
finer at PCGS.

1872
.
PCGS graded MS-64
. A highly underrated issue, the
1872 quarter is much rarer in Mint State grades than the much
lower-mintage Seated quarters from the 1880s. This near-Gem
is enhanced with reflective fields and attractive golden-tan and
russet iridescence indicating an early strike with fairly newly
prepared dies. The strike wanes slightly near the top of the
obverse.Housed in an Old Green Holder.

der patina graces each side in a somewhat variegated fashion.
Exquisitely detailed with a few wispy hairlines in the fields. Only
600 proofs were minted.

1874. Arrows
.
PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo
. Excep-
tionally bright with bold contrast between the frosty devices
and reflective fields. No toning appears on either side of
this glittering Gem. An important type issue with the arrows
at the date, and the condition is simply unimprovable. Vir-
tually free of contact. Only a couple of microscopic spots
are mentioned in the reverse field. One of the finest graded
and tied with a total of nine at this ultimate grade.
Pop 9;
none finer at PCGS.

1874. Arrows
.
NGC graded Proof 65
. Sharply struck and
seemingly hairline-free, the surfaces reveal boldly reflective
fields as the coin is rotated beneath a light. The surfaces pres-
ent an essentially brilliant appearance with just the slightest
amount of pale golden patina. The second of only two proof
deliveries of the Arrows type, the 1874 is a popular and scarce
issue at the Gem level of preservation. Only 700 proofs were
coined this year.
