SILVER CROWN 1625

Charles I, Stuart King, 1625-1649

Tower Mint under the king 1625-1642. Lis mintmark. First horseman. King mounted, holding sword,

riding to left, horse caparisoned with plume on head and crupper over hind legs; reverse, large garnished

square-topped shield over long cross fourchee. Rare. Light even wear with no damage. A special exam-

ple of this type, the flan broad without cracks, with perfect old-cabinet gray patina.

Tower Mint under the king 1625-1642. Rose mintmark. Second horseman. King mounted on a smaller

horse, holding sword, riding to left, horse caparisoned with plume on head only; reverse, oval shield, no

garnishment, “CR” at top. Rare. A well-detailed specimen with well-set medium gray toning.

Initial mark Sun. Shield of Saint George within a wreath of palm and laurel branches; reverse, con-

joined (side-by-side) shields of Saint George and Ireland, denomination “XX” (20 shillings) immediate-

ly above, the date above at start of surrounding legend GOD WITH VS. A highly lustrous and detailed

example of the largest gold coin issued by England’s only republic, the interregnum between the two

kings named Charles.
