Great Britain. Bank of England Dollar, 1804
. George III.
Struck as a Proof or pattern on a heavy/thick flan of 30.72
grams. Obverse portrait of king right by C. H. Kuchler. GEOR-
GIUS III DEI GRATIA REX. Top leaf points to upright of E. No
stop after REX. Reverse, Britannia seated facing left on rock,
holding trident and olive branch, cornucopia to right, beehive to
left, within ruled garter with denomination, date below, toothed
border both sides. This is not mentioned in many reference
works, although the heavy copper Bank Dollar pattern from the
same dies is itemised by ESC as number 164A. This silver Proof
is however listed in the Coincraft 2000 catalogue as G3CR-162
and priced (then) at £1700 in Extremely Fine -a tidy sum 16-17
years ago. It is believed that around 3 examples exist of the
thick silver Proof. Attractively toned in shades of blue and
cerise, there are only the tiniest of surface and edge abrasions
on what is an extremely rare and attractive pattern.
