An rarer date and uncirculated example of one of Britain' s

smallest (and lowest denomination) coins.

* The quarter farthing was introduced for use in Ceylon, but did

not later become legal tender in the UK as even at the start of

Victoria' s reign it was of little commercial value. This tiny coin is

however rare (there are only 5 dates available) and has been

accepted into the British numismatic series. It was even

included as a denomination in the Proof set of 1853. As with the

Queen Anne farthing, the Victorian quarter farthing' s rarity was

somewhat exaggerated. The numismatic writer Batty stated in

his work of 1886 that he had only seen one example dated

1853.
