1853 S.S. Republic
.
NGC graded EF-45
. Like many No
Motto double eagles, this coin was recovered from a recent
shipwreck find (the S.S. Republic in this case). The well-detailed
design elements show typical wear for the assigned grade and
just a few small marks. A desirable example with an interesting
story.

With blazing, softly frosted surfaces and handsome yellow-
gold color, this coin makes a lovely impression on the
viewer's eyes. Overall smooth surfaces are solidly graded as
Gem, further confirming this coin as an important Gem-
quality type candidate from the early Liberty double eagle
series. Sharply struck, and sure to please, only a couple of
inconsequential tiny marks are noted on each side.

Struck on a
pale green-gold planchet with yellow-gold patina and frosty sur-
faces. Light wear and a couple of abrasions on the obverse keep
this from a higher (Mint State) grade level. With the substantial
gold discoveries in California, 1849-1860s, construction and
operation of the San Francisco Mint meant that much less gold
had to be shipped back to Philadelphia, thus much lower mint-
ages resulted. In 1860, only 577,670 double eagles were minted
at Philadelphia. Housed in an Old Style Holder.
