.
NGC graded AU-58
. A partially lustrous, honey-gold
specimen with deeper orange accents in the border recesses of
the design, and traces of mint luster in the protected areas.
Both sides of this early San Francisco Mint issue are well
defined, and myriad tiny marks and abrasions have collected in
the fields from its short stint in circulation. Scarcer in high
grades than its mintage of 68,000 pieces suggests, just three
examples have been accorded Mint State recognition by PCGS.

. History holds that the 1858
ten dollar was a favorite of B. Max Mehl, a famous, long
time coin dealer from Fort Worth, Texas who well knew this
coin's true rarity. (This cataloger was fortunate enough to
meet Mr. Mehl once, prior to his death in 1957, and pur-
chase a 1900 Indian cent from him). A minuscule mintage
of just 2,521 pieces makes the 1858 eagle one of the key
dates in the series. NGC has graded five in AU-55, with just
three examples finer. This is a fairly well detailed Choice AU
example with soft orange-gold color and just a few notable
marks near the center of the obverse. An important oppor-
tunity for the gold specialist.

NGC graded VF-35
. A notably circulated example
with a generally untoned appearance and a few small bagmarks
on both sides. Despite a mintage of 9,000 pieces, this date is
much scarcer than its Philadelphia brother of the same year.
Surviving examples typically show extensive wear and no Mint
State coins have yet been graded at either of the major ser-
vices. (

. Nice straw-gold color with
some subtle red at certain peripheral areas with indirect
lighting. 1868 is considered a rare date with only 10,630
pieces minted. Abundant detail remains despite a short
stint in circulation. All of the With Motto eagles from 1866
through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and Condition
Census survivors generally are in the choice AU range. The
1868 has the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle pro-
duced from 1866-1873, but do not be deceived into think-
ing that this issue is easy to locate in the Choice AU range.
In fact, only a single Uncirculated example has been graded
by PCGS (MS62) with only 15 AU-58 examples. One thing is
for sure, the present 1868 is a high grade example of a
very difficult year and time frame. Identified by a scuff in
the field near stars 2 and 3, another over the top of Lib-
erty's head, as well as several chatter marks on the reverse.

NGC graded AU Details, Improperly Cleaned.
The eagles struck at San Francisco in 1870 circulated widely,
this despite a very limited mintage of just 8,000 pieces. The
result is that the issue is very scarce in today's market. This AU
specimen features surfaces that have been cleaned at one time.
As a result, one can see myriad hairlines and a somewhat dull
finish. The overall definition remains suitably bold despite the
presence of light wear, and none of the scattered abrasions are
worthy of individual attention. (
