Great Britain. Mint Error 20 Pence, 1998

. Struck on a small

neat round nickel or cupro-nickel (foreign on NGC holder) plan-

chet, well centred and with a weight of 2.8 grams (normally 5

grams) this may have been produced as a result of experimen-

tation at the British Royal Mint. In the early 1990s the size (and

weight) of the 5 pence and 10 pence coins was reduced dra-

matically, and there is speculation that the same fate was later

considered for the 20 pence coin.

penny copper coated steel planchet/flan, this may also be the

result of experimentation within the Royal Mint. The weight is

approximately 3.6 (normally 5 grams) but the coin appears well

struck and mint state.

King Edward I, 1272-1307 (26 pcs) and

King Edward II, 1307-1327 (22 pcs) Silver Pennies

Each fully described. Coins range from

Fair to Very Good

and all are nicely toned.

In addition, includes 15 broken

and chipped pennies (also fully described).

Sometime shortly after AD 1320, during the border wars

between King Robert Bruce of Scotland and the English

Plantagenet Kings, a hoard of silver pennies was hidden at

Loch Doon. The hoard was rediscovered late in the 20th

century.
