* Accompanied by a cutting from the British ' Daily Tele-
graph' newspaper of 5 November 1927, featuring images of
the ' new coinage.' The 6 new silver coins were introduced
late in 1927 and the Crown piece was the first Five Shilling
coin produced since 1902. It was also a Proof-only issue
which was not intended for general circulation, although
from the mintage of 15,030 many inevitably did circulate as
currency coins. The 1927 six-coin collection of coins
(Crown, halfcrown, florin, shilling, sixpence and three-
pence) was the first Proof set of coins issued since the 1911
(Coronation) collection.
The reverse designs were new creations by George Kruger
Gray (Dec 25 1880-May 2 1943). Kruger Gray provided
many of the (mostly heraldic) reverse designs for the Brit-
ish Empire coinage from 1927-1952. The Royal Mint experi-
mented with a small number of matte proofs which were
apparently made for photographic purposes.

* This small coin was undoubtedly part of a set of matte proof
silver pieces made in 1927 by the Royal for photographic pur-
poses. An interesting piece of British twentieth century numis-
matic history.

Great Britain. Crown, 1928
. S.4036; ESC-368; Dav-110; KM-
836. George V. Obverse portrait of king left by Bertram Macken-
nal. Reverse, large crown within wreath, by Kruger Gray. A near
flawless mint state example of this scarce coin. Only 9034
crowns were produced in 1928 and many suffered surface
severe marking from transportation in bags. This did not, and is
an outstanding example of a coin which is scarce in all top
grades.
