Malta. Silver striking of Gold 50 Pounds, 1977

. As Fr-65;

As KM-49. 14.95 grams. Struck as a piedfort in silver. Milled/

reeded edge. Obverse, mnara with £M 50 at sides and date

below. Reverse, stylised sun and sailing boat REPUBBLIKA TA

MALTA.

Another excessively rare ' off-metal' striking of a coin which is

only recorded in gold. With a weight of around 15 grams this is

nearly as heavy as the regular gold issue, but considerably

thicker. Possibly one or two of these experimental items exist.

Malta. Silver striking of Gold 25 Pounds, 1977

. As Fr-66;

As KM-48. 8.6 grams struck in silver. Obverse, the first Gozo

coin, date and £M 25 below. Reverse, stylised sun and sailing

boat REPUBBLIKA TA MALTA. Somewhat thicker than the regu-

lar gold version but weighs 6.1 grams. Unrecorded in any metal

other than gold, we believe only two of these experimental

pieces exist.

Malta. Silver 5 Pound pair, 1977

. KM-47. Type 1 (regular

issue) Obverse, Windmill of Xarolla date to right, denomination

to left. Reverse, stylised sun and sailing boat REPUBBLIKA TA

MALTA around. Type 2 has reverse with thinner lettering and

letters with less evident serifs, the waves below and around the

ship are quite different in style, etc. Type 2 may be a pattern or

special striking. Lot of 2 coins.

an ancient Maltese dog, date above groundline on left. Reverse,

frosted proof, quite scarce and sought after.
