1831 JR-2, Rarity 7 as a Proof
.
PCGS graded Proof
65 Cameo
. This is a wonderfully preserved Gem proof with
full, sharp definition throughout including the portrait,
stars, and eagle on the reverse. The denticles are sharply
squared off, unlike on business strikes which tend to show
a slope between the denticle edge and the field. A sharp
wire edge is also present indicating multiple blows of the
coining press. Some mottled purple and russet color over-
lays portions of the reflective fields, while the borders
exhibit deep sea-green shades, also in an irregular fashion.
The toning pattern must identify the specimen, since there
are no visible detractions.
Early United States Dimes
, published in 1984 by the John
Reich Collectors Society stated that JR-2 "… at least three
proofs have been seen from this pair of dies." In the 1992
Stack's auction of the legendary Floyd T. Starr collection,
the cataloger noted for lot 356, "fewer than 10 proofs are
believed to survive. Missing from the Bareford, Hawn, and
Garrett sales." Currently, our research indicates about 20
pieces were originally coined, about 15 of those still exist as
identifiable proofs. This specimen is high in the Condition
Census. Certainly an important offering for the seasoned
numismatist.
