“the striker of precious metal,
and master of glory, the victorious on land and sea”. Tarablus Gharb (“Tripoli West”) is an ancient city
and the modern capital of Libya in North Africa. The appellation “Gharb” served to distinguish Tripoli
“West” from Tripoli in Lebanon, which had been an Ottoman mint in the 16th century.

“sultan of the two lands
and khaqan of the two seas, the sultan, son of the sultan”. The “two lands” allude to Asia and Europe,
separated at Constantinople by the Bosporus. The “two seas” are the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
