PATTERN PROOF GOLD 5-GUINEAS BY TANNER 1770
George III, Hanover King, 1760-1820
Young Bust with long periwig; reverse, crowned shield of arms with date split at top. Plain edge. The
royal shield contains the Hanover leaping stallion in its fourth quadrant, first used during the reign of
George II, but here we see it perhaps more boldly displayed than in any other coin. Large gold coins
were fading from use at this time in history, being replaced by paper checks for larger commercial and
bank-to-bank transactions. An era was ending. One of the great treasures of the Tyrant Collection. A
splendid example of one of the rarest coins of this denomination in the entire English series, graced by
delicate reddish gold toning.
S-3723. WR-76 (R4). PCGS-graded PR63.
