GOLD 5-GUINEAS 1711
Anne, Stuart Queen, 1702-1714
DECIMO edge. Post-Union portrait and royal shield. S-3568. After the Act of Union of 1707 with
Scotland, the Royal Shield was redesigned: the badges of the realm were re-styled, the principal badge
now containing the English leopards and the prancing Scots lion combined (occupying two portions of
the Shield), while the French badge of a trio of Lis was moved to the right-hand position; only the Irish
harp retained its original position. To this day, the union with Scotland remains a topic of debate in the
United Kingdom, despite Queen Anne’s intention of uniting her realm. Choice and prooflike with a full
strike on each side, producing exquisite images of the queen and her new Royal Shield, enhanced by rich
golden surfaces and gorgeous old-time toning.
