SILVER PATTERN “PETITION” CROWN BY THOMAS
SIMON 1663
Charles II, Stuart King, 1660-1685
Laureate portrait facing right. Signed “Simon” in script beneath the portrait. Elegant reverse features a
finely detailed image of the Order of the Garter at center, instead of the adopted radiant cross. Toothed
borders. Named for its two-line edge of raised letters petitioning the king for approval of the engraving.
Only about a dozen examples are known, and this is a famous specimen with a provenance dating back
to 1824. The most celebrated of all English crowns, and among the most famous coins of the world! One
of the great treasures of the Tyrant Collection. Light rubbing on the high points, mostly of the obverse
(probably from storage in cabinets), rich gray patina, darkest in the fields.
S-3354A. ESC-72 (R4). Bull-429. PCGS-graded SP53.
