GOLD FINE SOVEREIGN (1551)

Edward VI, Tudor King, 1547-1553

Tower Mint, London. Third period of 1550-1553. Ostrich Head mintmark on both sides. Continuing the

image of his father, the boy-king is shown seated on his throne holding a golden orb and scepter, with a

portcullis at his feet. Reverse: full-blown Tudor rose with the royal shield at its center. Extremely rare.

Among the rarest gold coins of this short reign. One of the great treasures of the Tyrant Collection. Even-

ly struck on a broad but slightly wavy flan showing a detailed image of the king as well as full legends

of sharply made lettering, and pleasing yellow-gold color.
