From the Herbert & Aphrodite Rubin Collection; Purchased privately from an uncertain NFA FPL in the 1980s, no. 243.
The Aitolian League was founded in the mid to late fourth century BC to defend the interests of the Aitolian tribes against external threats, espe-
cially the growing power of Macedonia. It was initially a minor irritant to Alexander the Great and his early Successors, but after brilliant success
in repelling the Galatians (Celts) at Delphi in 279 BC the League evolved into a powerful force in Greece, constantly expanding its influence in the
region at the expense of Macedon. This coin may have been struck to fund the League' s long conflict with the Macedonian king Demetrios II Aito-
likos (239-229 BC).
