*This is an excessively rare piece produced by Reginald Huth

(1853-1926). Huth was an eccentric numismatist and a member

of a family of financiers in the City of London. From an Irish

numismatic history viewpoint he is best known for his patterns

of 1900 when he commemorated Queen Victoria' s visit to Ire-

land with a series of superbly detailed pattern Double Florins,

Three Shillings and Forty Pence coins. He eventually commis-

sioned a small selection of pattern Double Florins, Twelve

Groats and smaller ' Octorino' (Eight Pence) coins in the early

years of George V' s reign. Huth campaigned for the reintroduc-

tion of the silver Double Florin coin which sadly was never seen

in circulation again after 1890. He also produced several stun-

ning patterns for Hawaii and Spain, which are now avidly col-

lected items.
