In 1664, the Grandvizier Köprülü forced Montecuccoli to fight near St Gotthard at the Austrian frontier. The battle was won chiefly
through attacks by 6,000 French troops led by La Feuillade and Coligny and the German troops led by Waldeck. Montecuccoli
failed to exploit the victory.
