struck and fully brilliant with no detracting spots. This proof rarity offers
splendid contrast, incredible frost on the devices and pristine surfaces
that offer bold reflectivity. There are likely 50 to 70 known today from
only 86 minted. This outstanding coin is nudging ever so close to the
finest graded by PCGS, and one that has earned the ultimate contrast
designation. There is a tiny cluster of three pieces graded this high, with
just two seen a notch finer of this date. The surfaces glitter with reflectiv-
ity and contrasting frost on the undisturebed devices. These late 19th
Century proofs were some of the finest quality coins struck at the Phila-
delphia Mint, and remain a pinnacle of production which would be difficult
to surpass even today.
