Hawaii. 1883 Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society
Bronze Medal
.
Uncirculated
. Engraved on the reverse: "Pre-
mium for the 2nd Best Exhibited Firkin of Butter H. R. Macfar-
lane". 64 mm, 131.4 g, plain edge. Once cleaned and untoned
on both sides. Uncirculated details with surface hairlines on
both sides. Housed in the original wooden box as issued. All
medals we're offering here were all issued for the members of
the Macfarlane family, which seems like a pretty strong group
involved in importing and exporting, agriculture, publishing, and
other businesses. This piece would make a nice pair with the
following lot.

1749
Hawaii. 1883 Royal Hawaiian Agricultural Society
Bronze Medal
.
Choice Uncirculated
. Engraved on the
reverse: "Premium for the Best Exhibited Trio Dominique Chick-
ens H. R. Macfarlane". 64 mm, 128.8 g, plain edge. Beautiful
brown toning on both sides with a hint of mint luster, a minor
edge bump on the rim of the reverse. Housed in the original
wooden box as issued.
Usually the silver medals were issued for the best exhibitors and
the bronze ones were issued for the 2nd best exhibitors. Even
though all struck with the same die, the bronze ones usually
have a hand carved "2nd" before "Best" on the reverse, as seen
on the previous bronze medals. However, even struck in bronze,
this medal does not bear the "2nd", and the reason is still
uncertain.
