SULTANATES
1162
Sultans of Dehli. Firuz Shah Tughluq (AH 752-790 / 1351-1388 AD). Gold Tanka, no mint, undated,
10.85g. Citing al-Hakim II (G&G D460). Fine.
Rare
.
$ 775
During his reign, Firuz Shah cited three caliphs on his coinage, al-Mu’tasid, al-Mutawakkil and al-Hakim II, but this is the
only type that cites al-Hakim II.
1163
Sultans of Bengal. Nasir al-Din Nusrat (AH 925-938 / 1519-1531 AD). Gold Tanka, Arsah, 929h(?),
10.62g (G&G B790). Compact flan, extremely fine.
Rare.
$ 2,600
Arsah meaning “district” was probably a mint operating in East Bengal.
1164
Sultans of Madura. Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad Damghan (AH 740/41-745 / 1340-1344 AD). Gold Tanka,
Daulatabad, 741h, 11.63g (G&G MD12). Flan flaw at edge and in centre where there is a hole, perhaps
ex-mount, otherwise about extremely fine.
Extremely rare.
$ 6,500
Damghan’s gold is extremely rare. The mint name here is puzzling and presumably refers to Madura itself rather than the
Daulatabad of the Deccan. Although the famous traveller, Ibn Batutah, was in Madura around this time for while, very little
is know about the history of this short-lived Sultanate.
