for a late 16th century European silver coin. Lots of eye appeal
and a nicely detailed portrait.

* This coin was struck near the end of Gregory XIII's papacy.
After the death of Pope Pius V (1566-1572) Ugo Boncompagni
(later Gregory XIII) was successfully backed by the Spanish
king and many in the church, to become his successor. He was
to prove a quick-witted man with great legal and management
skills who led a faultless personal life. He increased the power
of the papacy and he introduced the Gregorian calendar.
