. Untoned. The usual circulation abrasions. One short
line in the field between stars 12 and 13 on the obverse. Some
residual luster present. This was recovered from the SS Repub-
lic shipwreck.
The SS Republic was a Civil War-era sidewheel steamship that
sank in 1865 while carrying a large cargo of silver and gold
coins and a stunning variety of everyday wares essential to life
in mid-19th century America. It was discovered by Odyssey
Marine Exploration in 2003. En route from New York to New
Orleans with passengers and commercial cargo, the SS Republic
was lost in a violent hurricane on October 25, 1865.

. Mostly untoned. Only 68,000
struck. An early San Francisco Mint $10 gold, the Mint opened
for business in 1854 when a flood of Gold Rush bullion was
deposited for coinage. Double Eagles comprised the main out-
put; $10 Eagles being much scarcer. (

. A
nice pleasing problem-free example. Just honest wear. The
inverted date is very clear with a glass, particularly so on the
upside down 1 underneath the 5. The S mintmark is almost
comically large when compared with later or earlier versions,
evidently the San Francisco Mint wanted to be noticed in this
particular year! With a mintage of 16,700 pieces, few 1865-S
Eagles are found in any grade, particularly so when the one
considers that the mintage is divided between the regular issue
and this much scarcer inverted date variety. (

PCGS graded AU-58
. Nice light gold tone. A rare
date. Only 10,630 minted. Near Mint State detail with light
pinkish-gold color and some radial luster. A touch of reflec-
tivity to the fields and some original mint frost in the pro-
tected areas of the devices. All of the With Motto eagles
from 1866 through 1873 (Closed 3) had low mintages and
Condition Census survivors generally are in the choice AU
range. The 1868, with a recorded mintage of 10,730, has
the largest mintage of any Philadelphia eagle produced
from 1866-1873. With that said, do not be deceived into
thinking that this issue is easy to locate in the choice AU
range. In fact, only a single Uncirculated example has been
graded by PCGS (MS62) and very few AU58 examples. One
thing is for sure, the present 1868 is a Condition Census
example of a tough year, and time frame, for eagles. Identi-
fied by a scuff in the field near stars 1 and 2, another over
the top of Liberty’s head, as well as a chattermark below TR
of TRUST on the reverse.
