. Light golden toning. With this
issue (1908-29) American numismatics had a coin designer who
broke with tradition in an overt way. What Bela Lyon Pratt did
was to recess the design below the surface of the coin. Forget
the fact that his Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles were far more
aesthetically challenging than the long-running and tried-and-
true Liberty heads they replaced. The design was innovative.
The results are popular with collectors to this day. Much more
so than they were when issued. (
