Vahram (Bahram) I, Sasanian King, AD 273-276

Sunrise # 759 (this coin), SNS Type Ib/2B, Saeedi 138. Superb Extremely Fine.

Mint. Unknown.

This is a fine example of Bahram I silver drachm. Once again as seen in coins of Ardashir I, there are

pellets in groups of three decorating the crowns korymbos as well as appearing behind the crown. In

addition there are 2 pellets on either side of a crescent moon on the fire altar on the reverse of the coin.

Sasanian Empire

Gold Dinar (7.48 g, 22 mm), AD 276-293

Vahram (Bahram) II, Sasanian King, AD 276-293

Sunrise # 764, SNS Type I/1, Gobl Type I/1. Superb Extremely Fine.

Mint: Unknown.

Bahram II was son of Bahram I. His reign marks a turbulent time for the dynasty as rival princes and

families begin a long power struggle to try to undermine the legitimacy of his reign. Bahram II was

successful in maintaining his throne and keeping the power within the immediate members of the house

of Sasan. His crown is decorated with the wings of victory. The power struggle that marks Bahram II

reigns also continued at the time of his successor Narseh. Historical record and rock carvings commem-

orating Bahram’s victory show that many families of aristocratic origin were defeated and never heard

from again.
