Shayk Uways, Jalayrid Sultan of Iraq and Azerbaijan, AH 757-776/AD 1356-1374

Baghdad mint (8.52gm). Square-in-circle obverse,

al-sultan al-a’zam Shaykh Uways bahadur khan,

mint interlinear, date in margin; Reverse, Kalima within looped octofoil, the Rashidun around. Unlike

his father Hasan Buzurg, Uways had no qualms about taking the title of sultan and placing his own

name on the coins. As the Mongol Ilkhanate crumbled into minor kingdoms, Uways became intent on

conquests in Persia. He took Tabriz in 1360, though Baghdad remained the Jalayrid capital.
