The signed tetradrachms of Syracuse are counted among some of the most desired coins struck in the Classical period. This is due not only to the

high quality of the engraving, which produced beautiful and often technically complex portraits of Arethusa as well as action-packed scenes of

chariot racing, but to the direct connection established between the possessor of the coin and its creator through the medium of the signature.
