Only 114 minted and this
is the first year of the “all brilliant” style of Proofs after years of seeing highly frosted
devices which created a number of Cameo or Deep Cameo coins, the 1902 issue offered a more
uniform brilliant style with little contrast between the devices and reflective fields. In fact, PCGS
has only grade a couple of coins as having the Cameo appearance for this date, and virtually
all other 1902 Proof double eagles lack this contrasting feature. Nevertheless, this is how these
coins were struck, and this is one of the finer examples which offers excellent orange-gold
color, booming reflectivity and strong visual appeal. The number that survived is likely in the 45
pieces range quite low considering the mintage of 114 pieces. PR-63 is right at the middle of
the bell curve for this issue as well, with several graded slightly higher, but perhaps even more
graded in lower grades including circulated, mishandled examples. A rare issue and important
coin that displays the change in proof format for the Philadelphia Mint rather well.

A subtle touch of golden toning graces
both sides of this beautiful gem example. This has always
been one of the favorite coins, indeed if not the favorite coin
stuck by our mints. The devices are exceptionally beauti-
ful, with Liberty striding toward the viewer while the eagle
on the reverse seems to fly right off the coin. The satiny
luster exudes off the fields, and the glory rays surround the
central devices, offering both focus to the centers as well as
protection of the fields. Scarce this nice and rare any finer,
this example resides in the top 3 or 4 percent of those seen
today from the original mintage of 11,250 pieces, with finer
coins few and far between. A perfect selection for the ad-
vanced specialist who desires quality, eye appeal and historic
numismatics
