* The little copper half farthing coin was introduced in 1828 and
made again in 1830 and 1837, for use in the British colonies.
After Queen Victoria ascended the throne the design changed
considerably and from 13 June 1842 the coin was additionally
made legal tender in the United Kingdom. The purchasing
power of a Penny in the 1840s was around 40 pence in today's
values (65 US cents) and there were 8 half farthings to one
Penny! There was consequently much cynicism of the need for
such a coin in Britain, with letters written to the Times newspa-
per. The half farthing ceased to be produced as a circulating
coin in 1856, but they are widely collected today, and the com-
monest date has a catalogue value of some £135 ($220) in mint
state.
