PCGS graded Proof 61.
CAC APPROVED.
When
studying proof mintages for three dollar gold coins, the
(high) mintage for the 1888, 291 pieces, is almost double
that of the next highest in the entire series. Further
research with PCGS Population figures shows a total of 129
pieces have been graded there; 94 at NGC. PCGS estimates
150 to 200 pieces are known, therefore we feel the mintage
figure is accurate accounting for normal losses over the
years, and likely resubmissions between both services. The
fields on this piece are nicely reflective, and there is even a
slight bit of contrast against the devices as is normal for
this issue. Light hairlining, scuffing, and a few small contact
marks account for the grade, but the overall appearance is
above-average for the grade.

ANACS graded Proof 50 Details, Cleaned.
Unfortu-
nately, this proof example was spent at one time and entered
circulation long enough to acquire some visible wear. The sur-
faces remain a yellow-gold color with some hints of reflective-
ness in the most protected areas of the design. Only 129 Proof
three dollar gold pieces were coined for collectors at Philadel-
phia in this, the final year for the denomination. Many of these
coins survive, but with an estimated population of just 85-95
pieces, the proof 1889 remains an undeniably rare issue.
