Rare
low mintage date as a mere 3,000 business strikes were
minted. This splendid gem specimen, probably from the
famed Beck hoard that appeared at auction in the 1970s,
glitters with intense semi-reflective mint luster. This beauty
will undoubtedly be treasured by its new owner.

Despite a mintage of 5,000 circulation strikes, the 1888
three dollar gold piece is relatively easy to locate in Mint
State through the MS-64 plateau. David Bowers (2005)
suggests that this is "probably reflective of fewer being
melted at the Mint." Gems, on the other hand, are scarcer,
and anything finer (such as this coin) is quite elusive. Glow-
ing luster emanates from both sides of this superior Gem,
and each is endowed with rich peach-gold patination. A
decisive strike results in sharp definition on the design ele-
ments. Coupled with these attributes are impeccably pre-
served surfaces that reveal just a couple of microscopic
marks. The CAC label aptly recognizes the technical quality
and aesthetic appeal of this lovely piece.

A
splendid untoned gem example of this scarce low mintage
date as only 5000 were struck. The surfaces screem with
semi-reflective mint luster. To be able to offer two gem
specimens in the same sale is unheard of.

PCGS graded MS-65
. The 1888 gold three dollar
has a business strike mintage of just 5,000 pieces, 291
proofs were also coined in this penultimate year for this
denomination. It is genuinely scarce in all grades, even
despite the fact that an unknown number of coins were
saved by contemporary collectors at the time. This is one of
the nicest examples we have seen, a coin characterized by
billowy mint luster and soft yellow-golden color. Sharply
defined, with no distracting abrasions or other blemishes in
evidence.
